Cruises 2023: Best New Ships, Itineraries Around the World

That's just a tad below the 7,084 passengers that can fit aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas — the world's largest cruise ship. As was the case with Celebrity Beyond, Ascent will have 179 more cabins than its sister vessels, each of which has 1,467 cabins. As a result, Celebrity Ascent, like Celebrity Beyond, will hold 3,260 passengers at double occupancy. That's up from a 2,910-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Apex and a 2,918-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Edge.

Seven Seas Grandeur (Regent Seven Seas Cruises)

Offering value-for-money cruises for British passengers, Ambassador Cruise Line is welcoming its second vessel. The classic-style Ambition was built in 1999 and has undergone several renovations since its last sailing as the AIDAMira. With eight restaurants, dining options are extensive for a ship of its size and if you’re staying in the top suites there’s the invitation-only Chef’s Table. The third boutique expedition vessel is the largest and has been designed with an ice-strengthened hull to explore some of the world’s most remote regions. Multiple observation points will provide passengers with the best views of passing scenery and wildlife.

“There’s also a greater space ratio onboard, allowing for less crowding and more space for guests to spread out and enjoy,” she says. Live (and sail) the luxe life aboard the sixth ship to join the Regent Seven Seas fleet. The fittingly named Grandeur is the sister ship to Seven Seas Explorer, described as the world’s most luxurious cruise ship when it first launched.

The first cruise itineraries have the Viva sailing through the Mediterranean region of Europe with stops in various countries like Spain, Italy and France. Resilient Lady will carry 2,700 sailors (as the line calls its passengers) and 1,150 crew. New for Virgin on Resilient Lady will be classic supper club show, Another Rose,  where cabaret will meet the theatrical. There will be comedy performances, magic tricks and the Festival Stage that features new talent and performers every few weeks. This newest ship in Virgin’s fleet has a hydrodynamic hull design, mechanization that reduces emissions and Climeon technology that converts waste heat into clean, carbon-free electricity.

Silver Nova's main pool area, for instance, will have an unusual horseshoe shape with an orientation that runs from the port side of the ship to the starboard side. The pool itself will be off-center in the space, skewed far to the starboard side of the ship, with rows of lounge chairs and a grand entrance on its port side and unobstructed views through glass railings on its starboard side. Like the Oasis-class ships, it's able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762, to be exact. Note that in some cases, the new ships coming in 2023 will arrive months behind schedule due to ongoing pandemic-related construction delays at the shipyards that are building them. Thanks to these delays, the first sailings of a few ships that were expected to debut in 2023 — including Royal Caribbean's much-awaited Icon of the Seas — have been pushed to 2024.

Additional dining venues on board will include versions of Silversea's main signature restaurant La Terrazza, French eatery La Dame, seafood eatery Atlantide and sushi outlet Kaiseki. A creation of the deep-pocketed MSC Group, which already owns MSC Cruises, Explora Journeys plans to launch at least six superluxurious vessels by 2028, each of which is designed to hold at least 922 passengers. To that end, Resilient Lady will have no buffets, no dress codes and no big Broadway-style theater shows.

Travel Types

With a length of 735 feet, and 750 passengers and 542 crew, the Grandeur has one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry. Regent is an all-inclusive cruise line, which means that drinks, dining, WiFi and shore excursions are included in your fare. Galleria Euribia is one of the longest LED domes on the sea and this indoor promenade has both main and specialty restaurants along with numerous shops. MSC also hopes to master the sea with their latest ship that features original works of art, and a hull that is also a visual delight.

Bars and restaurants in Currents include Dr. Inks, Ph.D, serving cocktails inspired by an octopus. The highly-anticipated Carnival Jubilee, now the cruise line’s flagship, embarked on her inaugural cruise on December 23, 2023, from her homeport of Galveston, Texas. The ship is sailing 7-night Western Caribbean cruises with calls at Roatan, Honduras, and Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. Emerald Yacht Cruises, a line best known for its river ships, launched its first ocean-going vessel, Emerald Azzura, in 2022 followed by an identical sister ship, Emerald Sakara, in 2023.

Eighty-two of the suites are connecting to accommodate multigenerational families (reunion, anyone?). Six restaurants offer global cuisine and elevated options such as sustainably sourced Wagyu beef and grilled octopus. Foodies will appreciate the intimate Chef’s Kitchen experience that’s hosted in a private kitchen overlooking the ocean. Other highlights are the four swimming pools, private cabanas, a comprehensive wellness program (sunrise yoga, an immune-boosting workshop) and unique excursions such as exclusive access to the Royal Swedish Opera.

Arriving in early 2023, Swan Hellenic’s SH Diana is the largest ship to ever join the fleet. A polar-class vessel featuring a Polar Class 6 ice-strengthened hull, she offers 5 Star accommodation for just 192 guests in 96 staterooms and suites. SS Diana is equipped with two comfortable tenders instead of Zodiacs for expedition landings. A new year means new cruise ships are on the horizon, and 2023 is shaping up to be a significant year for the industry. Several major cruise lines are set to debut new vessels, each offering unique features and experiences.

On the heels of its latest Norwegian Prima, the second in the namesake class — Norwegian Viva — will be unveiled in August. Viva will repeat Prima’s latest take on The Haven ship-within-a-ship complex, and feature a massive array of culinary offerings, a go-kart racetrack and more when it arrives in Miami. So that includes Bolt, the rollercoaster at sea, Family Feud Live, Playlist Productions and more. With advanced energy-saving technologies and waste management systems, guests that are conscious of their impact on the environment can rest assured that every effort is made to provide a stunning cruise with minimal impact.
